Step 1: Access the Online Portal
The Supreme Court of India has introduced an online portal for filing RTI applications. This portal can be accessed by visiting the Supreme Court RTI Portal1.
Step 2: Registration
To file an RTI application, you need to register on the portal. Provide your basic details such as name, address, and contact information. Ensure that all mandatory fields marked with an asterisk (*) are filled in.
Step 3: Drafting the Application
Once registered, you can draft your RTI application. Clearly state the information you seek from the public authority. Be precise and to the point to avoid any ambiguity. You can also attach supporting documents in PDF format if necessary.
Step 4: Payment of Fees
A nominal fee of ₹10 is required to file an RTI application. This fee can be paid through various modes such as internet banking, credit/debit cards, or UPI. Applicants below the poverty line (BPL) are exempted from this fee but must upload a valid BPL certificate1.
Step 5: Submission
After drafting your application and making the payment, submit the application through the portal. Upon successful submission, a unique registration number will be generated. This number should be used for any future correspondence regarding your application.
Step 6: Tracking the Application
You can track the status of your RTI application using the unique registration number. The portal provides updates on the progress of your application, including any additional fees required for providing the information.
Step 7: Filing an Appeal
If you are not satisfied with the response to your RTI application, you can file a first appeal through the same portal. Use the registration number of your original application to reference your appeal2.
Important Tips
